BECA is the Premier Destination for the Study & Practice of Media Arts
A Place to Develop Your Own Unique Voice
With dedicated, experienced professors, world-class facilities, and a hands-on approach to learning, Broadcast & Electronic Communication Arts (BECA) students experience a deep dive into the theory and practice of video, audio, radio, podcasting, writing, production management, show business, multimedia production, and more.
BECA grads enjoy working across the globe to entertain, inspire, and inform, and have been repeatedly recognized with Emmy, Oscar, Tony, Drama Desk, Golden Globe, Grammy, Peabody, and Theatre World awards.
KSFS Radio
KSFS is the radio station and podcast center for San Francisco State University. KSFS is operated by BECA students at our state-of-the-art facilities in Marcus Hall. We offer cutting-edge, free-form radio, including music, talk, sports, and information. The shows we stream seek to push the boundaries of what radio can be. We intend to be an integral part of the ongoing media (r)evolution and the myriad communities we serve, and we prioritize a dynamic educational experience for the students of BECA and San Francisco State University.
Audio Arts
BECA offers studio-based training in music production, recording, mixing, processing, sound reinforcement, sound for picture, and more. Students work in a professional studio environment, recording Bay Area bands and mixing real multitrack sessions. Advanced coursework includes capstone sound design classes where teams create original projects. Audio arts classes offer students the chance to develop their skills through a wide variety of audio storytelling mediums.
Video & Television
Students engage with the theory and practice of creating original television and video programming. They write, produce, direct, engineer, and perform in programs such as news, sports, comedy, drama, documentary, and live awards shows. You can also experience shooting on location, drone use, and working behind and in front of the camera. Regular shows such as State of Events, Under SF, and BECAfest are produced entirely by BECA students with the guidance of professors who bring real-world experience directly into the classroom and studios.
